Swift Monitoring of Ngc 4151: Evidence for a Second X-ray/uv Reprocessing
نویسندگان
چکیده
Swift monitoring of NGC 4151 with ∼6 hr sampling over a total of 69 days in early 2016 is used to construct light curves covering five bands in the X-rays (0.3–50 keV) and six in the ultraviolet (UV)/optical (1900–5500 Å). The three hardest X-ray bands (>2.5 keV) are all strongly correlated with no measurable interband lag, while the two softer bands show lower variability and weaker correlations. The UV/optical bands are significantly correlated with the X-rays, lagging ∼3–4 days behind the hard X-rays. The variability within the UV/optical bands is also strongly correlated, with the UV appearing to lead the optical by ∼0.5-1 day. This combination of &3 day lags between the X-rays and UV and .1 day lags within the UV/optical appears to rule out the “lamp-post” reprocessing model in which a hot, X-ray emitting corona directly illuminates the accretion disk, which then reprocesses the energy in the UV/optical. Instead, these results appear consistent with the Gardner & Done picture in which two separate reprocessings occur: first, emission from the corona illuminates an extreme-UV-emitting toroidal component that shields the disk from the corona; this then heats the extreme-UV component, which illuminates the disk and drives its variability.

Analysis of broad-band X/γ-ray spectra of NGC 4151 shows that the data are well modelled with an intrinsic spectrum due to thermal Comptonization with temperature ∼ 50 keV and X-ray spectral index α ∼ 0.4– 0.7. The variable X-ray spectrum pivots at ∼ 100 keV, which is consistent with the observed approximatly constant γ-ray spectrum. The observed UV/X-ray correlation can be explained by two spe...
متن کاملThe complex soft X - ray spectrum of NGC 4151
We present a detailed analysis of the complex soft X-ray spectrum of NGC 4151 measured by the RGS instruments aboard XMM-Newton. The XMM-Newton RGS spectra demonstrate that the soft X-ray emission is extremely rich in X-ray emission lines and radiative recombination continua (RRC), with no clear evidence for any underlying continuum emission. Line emission, and the associated RRC, are clearly d...
متن کاملThe origin of the correlation between the UV and X - rays in NGC 4151
We propose that the UV/X-ray correlation observed in NGC 4151 by EXOSAT and IUE is due to reemission of the X-ray flux absorbed by cold clouds in the line of sight. This transmission model satisfies the energy balance, provides a good fit to the X-ray and UV data, and predicts no Compton reflection of X-rays (as observed). The correlation can alternatively be explained by reprocessing of X-rays...
متن کاملUltraviolet and X-ray variability of NGC 4051 over 45 days with XMM–Newton and Swift
We analyse 15 XMM–Newton observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051 obtained over 45 d to determine the ultraviolet (UV) light curve variability characteristics and search for correlated UV/X-ray emission. The UV light curve shows variability on all time-scales, however with lower fractional rms than the 0.2–10 keV X-rays. On days–weeks time-scales the fractional variability of the UV is Fvar ...

Observations of the C iv and Mg ii absorption lines in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 obtained with the GHRS in October 1994 are presented. The data from the STScI archive show multiple broad and narrow components in both species. In addition to Galactic absorption, four narrow and four broad systems associated with NGC 4151 are identified. Two broad systems dominate the total equivalent width, ...
